When I got married, 51 years ago, my sister sent me a butt load of recipe cards and pamphlets from her employer, the Hunt Wesson company. A version of this casserole was included. Instead of beef broth it called for a cup of water and a cup of frozen peas. As a very young, inexperienced cook this turned into one of our go-to favorite meals even after my culinary skills and repertoire improved. After my daughter was born and was old enough to ask for specific foods this was also one of her favorite dishes. Up until she was a teenager, when asked what she wanted for her birthday dinner she would always asked for 'Casserole' even though she had the option of any home cooked meal or restaurant in town. In the early days this would very often be our 'day before payday' meal as I could go to the store with $5 and come home with all the makings for a complete meal. LOL!

1.25.18 I think most of us have had versions of this dish known by many different names. I know I've made my own "hot dishes" over the years, and I never thought about cooking the macaroni right in the skillet...saved one dirty pan to wash! It did get a little thick once the mac was cooked, so I added some extra beef broth, but this certainly was quick and easy. Also, I think this is one of those recipes that you just have to adjust the seaonings to your taste preferences. I was looking for a little something different, so I did add more soy sauce and felt it needed more of a kick, so more hot sauce as well. Not sure that I'd make again, but it was OK.

Yes, I agree, we all have a version of this over the years, but we really liked it. Made same substitution as someone else and used 14 oz. can of diced tomatoes! I am gluten free and found the Publix brand of penne pasta tasted better than so many other rice noodles I've used. We couldn't taste any difference!! Just Perfect for us!!

Great recipe! Needed something easy and good for my kids, and this was perfect. I used canned diced tomatoes instead of cutting my own, and it worked just as well. Nice!

For some reason I got old and forgot how to make a good hamburger and macaroni hot dish. I used to make it all the time when I was younger, so happy I found this recipe it has the flavors I remember.

I made no changes and it was wonderful. During this time with no money, it was an inexpensive main dish to serve that was awesome for kids to eat and me too. It reminded me of my mom's goulash she served at least once a week.. loved it! Thank you

I wouldn't double the recipe again, but uff dah, this was really good!

Loved it. Thank you for sharing.

Easy to make, decent taste and hearty. What more can you want?

Made this tonight and my family loved it! Only thing I did different from this recipe was I didn't add the beef broth. I didn't want it to be watery, I like it thicker. Other than that it was perfect!!!! Thanks!

My husband really liked it

I can't east soy sauce, would it effect the recipe if I leave it out or what can I use to replace it.
06/23/2018
This was the best "goulash" dish I have ever had. Delicious.
01/11/2019
Really good recipe, I added some mushrooms for a few extra veggies. Definitely will make again as the kids loved it

Fantastic and easy! Didn't change a thing except we have a soy allergy so used about 2 TBSP of Coconut Aminos and omitted Worcestshire sauce.
07/02/2018
We added some cheese, but that was the only change we made. Absolutely spectacular dish! Great for a cold day!

Really liked this casserole , grew up in ND ate similar type . I did sub canned diced tomatoes for the fresh and also skipped the green pepper( gives me indigestion) for sure will be making it many times . sure it is best with fresh tomatoes will try that when in season for them
12/09/2018
Very good!

An excellent dish and easy to make I added a little bit of white wine at the end of frying the noodles and used Rotel tomatoes instead of regular Tomatoes was awesome!
04/25/2018
Will make it again. Pretty quick meal. I did add fresh mushrooms also.
11/10/2019
I didn't have any Worcestershire sauce, so I added a little bit of steak sauce and more soy sauce. Instead of 1 cup of beef broth, I used a 14 oz can. So far really good!. I think next time, I am going to put a little douse fo sour cream on the top to bring a little cream to it! So far really good!

Hubby and son loved it as is. I substituted zucchini for the pasta for my portion (low carb version) and

I'm lazy and didn't measure anything. Still came out fantastic, and is easy to tweak to your own taste
12/31/2018
This was pretty tasty! When I do it again, I might serve with green onions, or some classic chili toppings.
03/30/2020
Wonderful dish. We had to double it and use canned tomatoes, but it was still really good.
02/09/2019
This is by far the worst recipe I have ever made. I followed the directions to the letter and have never been so disappointed. My wife and I not only could not finish our portions. We, by the way, are Minnesotans.
03/28/2018
Terrific recipe! I subbed the beef w/ground turkey and used Brown Rice Elbow Macaroni; otherwise, I followed the recipe as written. My hi

Made it according to recipe. If I make it again, will decrease the macaroni by half!! Flavor was good, but way too much pasta and it did not hold well as a leftover due to pasta imbalance.

My husband really loved this. I thought it had a little too much black pepper, but otherwise it was perfect. Cooked the macaroni together with the other ingredients and it was done perfectly. Since I made it in April I did not use fresh tomatoes but using one 14 oz can of petite diced tomatoes worked out OK. I found that I was lacking a can of tomato sauce but substituted a can of tomato paste mixed with water in a 14 oz can. If I made it again I would make it exactly as written except I would only use 1/4 tsp. black pepper, then those who want more can add it at he table.
04/02/2020
lots of flavor. I used leftover reheated macaroni and turkey burger. Worked great!

This is fantastic! The flavors mix beautifully, the fresh tomatoes give a spark to it that makes you want to eat all of it. I had it for dinner, brought some to work for lunch. Unfortunately the tomatoes loose their spark once in the fridge so it was good but not as good as the same day it was cooked. VERY tasty + filling.

Isolation inspiration! Wanted something different for ground beef and this was a hit! I never make this sort of dish, so it was fun to do something very homey. Subbed tomatoe paste with water and some catsup for tomato sauce, but other than that followed recipe as stated. Will make it again as requested by my hubby.

Everyone loved this at my house, I will definitely make it again and probably double the recipe so we have enough leftovers for everyone. I didn't have enough onion on hand, but I added some minced onion to make sure I got enough of the flavor to make up for it.

This was very good, quick and easy. We cut the recipe by half using the serving adjust feature. Everything halved beautifully except the hot sauce which increased to 5/8 tsp from 1/8 probably due to some fraction rule. Despite adding additional hot sauce, it was still delicious I added a dollop of sour cream which made it creamier to my serving.
10/31/2020
I made the recipe as directed except for one thing, I only put in 1 cup of elbow macaroni instead of 2 cups. It was very delicious, I will be making this again.

Texans love y'all

Delicious, easy-to-make dish. I used a whole pepper and onion, and canned diced tomatoes, and a small can of tomato paste instead of tomato sauce, because that is what I had. I will indeed make it again. Thanks, JDawg!

I made it exactly like directed. I always thought pasta required boiling water.. and thought it was a mistake but i tried it.. It was delicious and very tasty! of course i added cayenne pepper for heat and fresh garlic, basil, and oregano.. and cheeeeesee. was much better than I expected. kindof a cross between American chop suey, and hamburger helper but of course that homemade kuch healthier version.. this is a keeper

This sound really good but I have1 question before making it. Do you cook the Mac before adding it to the skillet or add it and it absorbs the juice while dish is cooking?
05/17/2020
I'm adding this to my go to menus.. quick and easy to make also very flexible. I added 1 cup of beer and some beef bullion instead of the beef broth and left the lid off to make the sauce thicker

For this Minnesotan, this hotdish is truly a taste of home. It's exactly like the hotdish my mom used to make! Delicious! Thank you for sharing a very authentic Minnesota staple!

I made it and it was a hit. Everyone loved it.
06/26/2021
loved it
05/08/2020
Very tasty. I used small bowtie pasta and was also out of tomato sauce so used a store brand spaghetti/tomato sauce. Next time I'd add the rest of the pepper.
09/04/2020
Turned out quite good however added a little more seasoning. I used chipotle chili powder, adobo, oregano, cumin and little more garlic powder. I used red enchilada sauce instead of tomato sauce. Forget to take a picture.

Loved it!!! Have made it several times in the last two weeks. I increase the hot sauce to a full teaspoon because I like hot sauce. Great recipe. Thanks.
03/28/2021
Tastes like a slightly healthier hamburger helper. Made it without the hot sauce and it tasted great!
06/29/2021
Good comfort food. Easy dish to make. Made it step by step. 4.25 stars. Yes, i would make it again.
09/28/2020
My husband's favorite...especially this recipe!
07/02/2020
Great dish!!! Made it in the summer in AZ and was very good but would really be good during the winter on a cold rainy day!! The only change I made was I added a second cup of beef broth towards the end to give it a little more juice. Otherwise, I made it as per the recipe. I highly recommend this dish!

YUM! I usually don't eat much macaroni. My kid prefers boxed mac-n-cheese to homemade, and I like other pasta for most dishes. But someone gave us several large packages of macaroni recently, so I turned to this site for inspiration. I'm so glad I found this recipe! My 8yo is thrilled. I never thought "boring old" hotdish could be so tasty. And, I love that it only uses one pan!

Growing up in the Iowa, I've tried many variations of ground beef and macaroni dishes ("goulash" to my family) and this is hands down our favorite. Made it in my Instant Pot and it turned out great.
05/18/2020
was excellent will make again followed to the tee
01/30/2022
Very easy to make with a very good taste. Family loved it- comfort food not hot or spicy. I used a 14 oz can of diced tomato, and used dehydrated bell peppers instead of fresh (didnt have these items in my produce bin)... came out a little dryer than pictured, but still tasted great.

I needed an easy new "go-to" for my brother and myself, & this is it! Made it with canned tomatoes, without the hot sauce, & definitely without the green pepper! Delicious! Will make this again many times, I'm sure.
08/29/2021
I didn't put the salt in , used the entire can of broth . And used caned tomato's instead of store bought ! We LOVE this !!!!
04/04/2022
It was good. I used 2 cups of beef broth. Which if I didn't it wouldn't of had enough liquid. I don't know why you need to put the macaroni in the pan with onions and peppers when it's not cooked it started to burn them. But it turned out good. I wouldn't put them in the pan with those again.
12/01/2020
I used red pepper instead of green.. Delicious
04/06/2020
Delicious! I followed the recipe and some suggestions also and that made for a very tasty dinner. I added some extra green pepper and onion and used a healthier rotini pasta instead of the regular one.
04/02/2020
Basic, tasty comfort food. I browned the beef with onion and seasonings as mentioned by a few other reviewers. Added mushrooms instead of bell pepper, as a personal preference. Used rotini vs elbows as I think it holds sauce and the beef better. 2 cups of pasta was half of a 16 oz box. It was not too much pasta for a pound of beef. The only issue I had, which I'll avoid next time is that I expected the pasta to take much longer to absorb the liquid and soften, since it wasn't being boiled first. So it was a bit mushy rather than al dente, by dinner time. Still this was filling and had wonderful flavor. Added just a bit of shredded cheese as garnish.

The person who said it was awful didn't grow up in my family. It was just like my mom's: definitely good old-fashioned comfort food.
